Programme

The Fellowship Programme is the heart of our Academy. This is where tomorrow’s knowledge is created. Here scholars and scientists from all around the world are able to research freely on global themes.

For
whom?

The Fellowship Programme of the Academy is aimed at outstanding and highly qualified scholars and scientists of all nationalities. We welcome applicants from all disciplines who are researching in the Academy’s thematic area. Apart from political science, legal studies, economics, history and sociology applications from science and technology studies are welcome as well once they address relevant issues of social dynamics. It is addressed primarily to established university faculty, but also to younger scholars and scientists (holding at least a doctorate). Eligible for short-term fellowships are experts with professional experience in the fields of politics, diplomacy, business, NGOs and the media. The focus here is on the exchange between research and practice and the practical application of scientific findings.

How long?

The group of renowned scholars and scientists of different nationalities gains the opportunity to come to the Academy for a period of up to ten months to work on a theme in international politics that they have each chosen themselves. Shorter visits are also possible and can be used especially for building connections with other figures of the research and institutional landscape of North Rhine–Westphalia. Proposals to form a research group with up to eight members are welcome.

With whom?

The Fellows work in the Academy building, where they find ideal working conditions and the opportunity for discussion with other Fellows. The disciplinary variety and the meeting of different perspectives from research and practice, and above all from different disciplines and regions of the world, creates an atmosphere of reciprocal learning. The goal is also to initiate and prepare joint projects and to build up and enliven national and international research connections. The Academy’s working language is English.

Who chooses?

The Fellows are selected by an international Academic Board. To apply, as well as a sketch of the research project to be pursued at the Academy, submission of publications, CV and a list of publications is required. Applications are not yet open. The first selection process is in preparation. Information about it will be available here soon.

Fellowship

Funding

The Academy makes an individual agreement with each of the Fellows that takes into account the financial situation at their home institution. The stay in Bonn is not meant to lead to any financial disadvantage for the Fellows. Paying for a substitute to fulfil one’s duties or providing a monthly stipend are equally valid options. The Academy also bears the costs of travel to and from Bonn and of accommodation while in residence.

Families

Partners and children are welcome. The Academy helps in the search for places in the local (international) schools, kindergartens and crèches.

Accommodation

The Academy seeks out appropriate residences in Bonn for the Fellows and their families who come with them. The Academy covers the costs.

Working conditions

The Fellows work in the Academy’s building in the villa suburb Bad Godesberg, a few minutes’ walk from the banks of the Rhine. The building is a meeting place, also for guests whom the Fellows themselves can invite. The Academy provides technical equipment and a library service for research literature.
