“The Council of the European Union adopted its common position (‘general approach’) on the Artificial Intelligence Act in December’2022. The draft regulation presented by the Commission in April 2021 is a key element of the EU’s policy to foster the development and uptake across the single market for safe and lawful AI that respects fundamental rights. The EU AI act aim is to ensure that AI systems placed on the EU market and used in the Union are safe and respect existing laws and union values.
The workshop shall bring in policy researchers, experts, and civil society voices to deliberate the EU AI Act and its manifestation at luring in global investments in AI into the EU single market. The workshop shall discuss viewpoints at balancing the effective governance and existing laws on fundamental rights and raise questions regarding fairness and transparency issues. The AI workshop shall bring in voices from the Global South (Africa, Asia and Latin America and discuss global south viewpoints on the EU AI Act and deliberate the AI policy motivations within the Global South from an ‘Ethical and responsible AI’ and investment perspective as part of the respective national AI strategies.”
